Along the west side of Auburn, between “U” Street and “Q” Street, is a 35-acre property featuring a pair of ponds and neat rows of trees, as well as a machine shed and a home. This property is currently owned by Dennis Wheeler, but on March 16th, the city entered into an “option to purchase agreement” with Dennis. Pending the results of an upcoming hearing, as well as a City Council meeting, the city of Auburn plans to purchase the land and have most of the 35 acres graded and prepared with infrastructure to create 29 residential lots and five multi-family lots. Four and five unit townhouses are expected to be built atop the multi-family lots. Third-party developers will bid for both infrastructure jobs and the individual lots.

Despite a couple of technical difficulties with the touchpad timers, the Auburn Aquadogs dove into the cool waters for their first at-home swim tournament on Saturday, June 10, at 9:30 a.m. Children as young as 6 and as old as 16 swam their hearts out in the medley, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle relays. Auburn Municipal Pool hosted Auburn, of course, as well as Nebraska City, Maryville and Plattsmouth for a total of 42 relays. The day started with medley relays consisting of backstroke and breaststroke, then butterfly and, to finish the race, freestyle. Most of the relay teams were full with four swimmers each, but when a team didn’t have four, their last swimmer doubled up. Coaches Amanda and Sydney Neal cheered their swimmers on from either side of the lane along with James Neal and Abigail Lacy. The swimmers huffed and puffed as they pulled themselves out of the water, and even though a couple of the younger kids needed to catch their breath on the floating ropes dividing the lanes, no one gave up. This Auburn relay meet was the second competition the Aquadogs have participated in, and there are many more to come.
