HERMAN ALLEN “HAM” MOENNING

1929-2019

Herman Allen Moenning, affectionately known as “Ham”, was born April 29, 1929 in Yoder, Colorado. He was one of seven children of Otto and Ruby (Crow) Moenning. Herman graduated from high school in Colorado Springs, received a bachelor’s degree from Los Angeles State College in California, and went on to earn a Master’s in Education from Long Beach State College.

In 1948 Herman entered the United States Navy. He served on the USS Helena during the Korean War and was given his nickname Ham while in the service. Herman was honorably discharged February 10, 1952.

On January 30, 1953 Ham was united in marriage to Alice Elaine Redmon in Los Angeles, California. They originally made their home in California and would be blessed with two daughters, Denise Kathleen and Karen Sue.

Herman taught Industrial Arts at Santa Ana High School for many years. After moving his family to southeast Nebraska, he farmed and taught part-time at Peru State College. Ham also worked as an industrial engineer in Lincoln, Nebraska for several years. He had been a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Kiwanis Club.

Surrounded by family, Herman passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at his home in Auburn. He had reached the age of 89 years, 10 months and 20 days. His parents, two brothers, and a grandson preceded him in death.

Herman is survived by his wife Alice of Auburn; daughters Denise Henderson and husband Roger of Auburn; Karen Niemann of Auburn and fiance’ Rick Oswald of Rock Port; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; brother Vern; sisters Maxine, Sharon, and Reva; other relatives and friends.

A graveside funeral and committal service was held Friday, March 22, 2019 at Sheridan West Cemetery near Auburn, with Chaplain Richard Bristol officiating. Graveside military honors were provided by American Legion Post #23 of Auburn and the U.S. Navy Military Honors Detail.

Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
