HARLEY C. GOINGS, SR.

1932 - 2024

Harley Carroll Goings, Sr. was born to Floyd H. and Rose (Lavigne) Goings on March 26, 1932 in Bridgeport, Nebraska. He passed to his heavenly home on January 12, 2024. Harley grew up near Auburn and attended Center Country School six miles north of Auburn.

He was united in marriage to Frances P. Rieken on Dec. 14, 1952 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Johnson, Nebraska. This union was blessed with three children, Theresa, Vicky and Harley, Jr. He was drafted into the Army on March 17, 1953 where he served for two years. After his honorable discharge, Harley farmed for 3 years near Auburn. Frances and Harley moved to Tecumseh in 1958. He ran the pool hall for 3 years in Tecumseh, started construction work on the Missile base north of Tecumseh in 1960 and joined the Iron Workers Local #21 in 1961 where he worked for 30 years until retirement.

Harley was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Tecumseh where he served on the church board for several years. He also served on the Veterans Administration Board for 8 years. He was a long time member of the Tecumseh VFW Post #8221 and provided military honors to fellow comrades for many years. Harley made all the flag racks and the cranks for Avenue of Flags. In his youth, Harley enjoyed stock car racing and after retirement he spent his time bowling, golfing and working in his shop. Harley fabricated the entire fence for the Glenrock Cemetery, east of Brock. His wife, Frances passed away May 27, 2021.

He is survived by his daughter Theresa Borrenpohl and husband Jim of rural Tecumseh and son Harley Goings, Jr. and wife Maureen “Mo” of Tecumseh, grandchildren, James Borrenpohl and wife Briana, Jonathan Borrenpohl and wife Erica and Jessica (Borrenpohl) Szychowski and husband Jason, Lindy Mahoney and Jeff Mahoney and Michael Goings and Jared Goings, 9 great-grandchildren, Brooke, Jenna, Jackson, Jolyne, Andrew, Riley, Edwin, Summer, Paisley and great-great-grandchild, Kyler, sisters-in-law, Peg Thomsen, Tena Green, Lena Lotter, Irene Rieken and Vera Rieken and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Frances, daughter, Vicky Mahoney, brothers, Gale and Donna Goings, Dean and Anita Goings, Loren Goings and Glade and Laverne Goings and sister and brother-in-law Marjorie and Lloyd Johnson.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2024 at the United Methodist Church in Tecumseh, Nebraska with Pastor Makena Riungu and Pastor Jeff Petersen, Asera Care Hospice Chaplain officiating. Cheryl Meister served as organist for congregational hymns, “In The Garden” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” Military rites were conducted by the Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team.

Interment was in the Tecumseh Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska. Memorials may go to the family’s choice. Services were entrusted to Wherry Mortuary, Tecumseh, Nebraska.
