GWEN J. VAUGHN

Gwendolyn Joy (Hays) Vaughn, one of two daughters of Frank and Ruth (Applegate) Hays, was born November 29, 1934, in Peru, Nebraska. She attended school in Peru from elementary to high school to graduating from Peru State College with a bachelor’s degree in Education. Gwen later earned a master’s at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

On June 1, 1957, Gwen was united in marriage to Maurice L. Vaughn in Peru. Two children, Gary and Shari, were born to this union. The couple made their home in Auburn, Nebraska to raise their family.

Gwen taught business and typing classes at Auburn High School from 1965 to 1997, helping many students prepare themselves for the business world. She was constantly teaching, even making sure the grandkids got their homework finished. The legacy she left will remain for years to come.

A member of the Auburn Country Club, Gwen enjoyed golfing and playing cards, especially pitch, pinochle, and bridge. She was known for her baking and loved dancing and fishing with Morrie. She even bought a fishing boat after Morrie’s passing.

In her later years, as her health became an issue, Gwen moved to Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair, Nebraska. It was there, on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, she passed away at the age of 87 years and 29 days. Gwen was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Ruth, husband Maurice, and daughter Shari Vaughn Teten.

Gwen is survived by her son Gary Vaughn; grandchildren Andy Vaughn, Joseph Vaughn, Sara Vaughn, Kellie Vaughn, Nathan and wife Erin Teten; numerous great-grandchildren; sister Christie Nanfito; stepfather Fred Gfeller; other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held Monday, January 3, 2022, at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn, officiated by Rev. Jackie Gfeller. Serving as casket bearers were Andy Vaughn, Joseph Vaughn, Ryker Vaughn, Scott Teten and Nathan Teten. Fred Gfeller was honorary bearer. Burial followed in Sheridan West Cemetery at Auburn.

Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
