BETTY A. SMITH

Betty Ann Darling was born October 13, 1940 in Auburn, Nebraska. She was one of three children of Ralph and Violet (Kreuger) Darling and attended school in Auburn. After graduation from Auburn High School in 1959, Betty went on to attend Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri.

On October 1, 1961 Betty was united in marriage to Jerry Smith at the Auburn Christian Church. They made their home in Auburn and were blessed with three sons: Kevin, Lanny, and Mark.

Although Betty always considered being a homemaker to be her #1 job, she also worked outside the home. In the summers, she worked at the Auburn Municipal Pool teaching swimming lessons. She then worked for 20+ years at the Pamida Store in Auburn.

Betty loved her time spent teaching swimming at the pool, and she enjoyed traveling to vacation spots as well.

After being admitted to the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Betty was transferred to Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska on February 27, 2019. She passed away there on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at the age of 78 years, 4 months, and 15 days. Her parents and brother-inlaw Alvin White preceded her in death.

Betty is survived by her husband Jerry of Auburn; sons Kevin of Henry, Illinois; Lanny of Beijing, China; Mark of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother Ralph Darling of Auburn; sister Shari Holmquist of Burwell, Neb.; sister-in-law Nancy White of Auburn; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Tom Osborne, was Monday, March 4, 2019 at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial followed in Sheridan Cemetery near Auburn.

Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
