Peru Residents Asked to Conserve Water After Water Plant Shutdown

Monday morning, March 18 Renee Critser, Nemaha County emergency management director updated the Nemaha County Herald on the flood emergency in the county.

The City of Peru’s water plant is shut down, she said. Peru residents are being requested to conserve water, Critser noted. State officials are sending down bottled water. Efforts have been underway towards obtaining trucks to transport water from Auburn to Peru, she said.

Critser reported the City of Peru evacuated homes up to Fifth and Olive Streets. Water has also risen up to Fifth and Mulberry Street. Water is also getting up behind the creek on the east side of the city. The emergency manager was unsure of the name of the creek.

All Peru State College (PSC) students have been sent home, Critser stated. Students will be returning to campus when the water issue is solved towards getting the city’s water tower filled on a consistent basis, she noted.
