Saturday night in downtown Auburn went differently than most people would expect and the effects are still easily visible. Onlookers gathered in the municipal parking lot on the east side of Cafe Metro to watch a long-time business become consumed by fire.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 20, the Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fire at Auburn Automotive/BetterWay Automotive in downtown Auburn. In addition to Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, mutual aid calls later went out to the fire departments in Peru and Johnson, and to Nebraska City for its aerial truck to help with fighting the fire which involved two buildings in the 800 block of Central Avenue.

Auburn Fire Chief Vaughn Severs said approximately 30 firefighters responded with a number of trucks and the last remained on the scene until about 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Their priority was to control the fire and to keep it from reaching the American Dream building.
