County Commissioners Approve Public Safety System Enhancement

A public safety software system proposal for the Nemaha County Sheriff’s Department was accepted by the county commissioners Wednesday, April 28.

The $366.125.81 offer from Central Square Public Safety is subject to further negotiations. Of that, $40,000 will possibly be paid out of the 2020-2021 budget. Included is a five-year maintenance contract. The sheriff’s department will be requesting wireless set aside funds from the Nebraska Public Service Commission to help with the cost. The commission would not consider the request until the county board acts, Sheriff Brent Lottman told the commissioners.

The sheriff’s department is acquiring a computer aided dispatch it has not had previously; plus a records and jail management system. He states he has seen the Central Square Public Safety product used by other Nebraska agencies.

Lottman said the present records system was installed in the early 2000s and needs upgrading. Implementing the changes will take over nine months, including 10 to 15 hours weekly, the sheriff noted. He added training on the new system will take two weeks.
