Larry A. McGee, retired FBI agent, avid hunter and beloved husband, father and grandfather, died on August 19, 2026, at the age of 84 at home from cancer.

Larry was born on March 21, 1942, in Bedford, IA; the son of Russell and Nelle Mc-Gee. He attended Bedford, IA Community Schools, served as a U.S. Marine, graduated from Coe College Cedar Rapids, IA, and graduated from the FBI Academy Quantico, VA.

Special Agent, Larry McGee, will be honored not just for the badge, but the heart behind it. Larry stood for justice, integrity, and service-not because it was easy, but because it was right. FBI Duty assignments were Dallas, Chicago and Omaha. Memorable SWAT assignments included: 1973 Wounded Knee Occupation, 1984 John J. Joubart’s capture; 1992 LA Riots, 1993 Waco Siege, and 1996 Montana Freeman Standoff. In 2000, Larry was selected to serve on one of the nation’s first ten FBI Fugitive Task Forces, helping to locate and apprehend some of the country’s most dangerous fugitives. He is known for the capture of two top 10 fugitives in the U.S.

Larry had a lifelong love affair with trail mix and Bunny Tracks ice cream. He excelled in hunting deer, ducks and geese; outsmarting the squirrels from eating the deck, reading and watching war history, watching football and fights and being the notable grumpy old man.

Larry is survived by the love of his life, wife Diane (Schnitzer) McGee of 18 years; daughters: Susan (Robert) Sutton and Sarah (Todd) Allen; grandchildren Kortni (AJ) Hupp, Taylor and Marisa Sutton; former spouse Judy McGee; stepsons: Alex (Nicole) Schnitzer and Brett (Melanie) Schnitzer; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Kora, Callen, Alec, Brandon, Lilly, Brady and Allie Schnitzer; sister-in-law Jeani Larsen; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Nelle McGee; in-laws Marvin and Jean Larsen, and brother-inlaw Alan Larsen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City. A Graveside Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Omaha National Cemetery in Omaha, NE with Military Honors by the United States Marine Corps.
