Shirley Lee Neddenriep was born February 19, 1929, at the Dorothy Helms Maternity Hospital, Auburn, Nebraska, to John Charles and Bessie (Brown) Barnes, the eldest of three children. Later John and Bessie divorced. On July 10, 1936, Bessie married Clarence Lockwood. Shirley was baptized into the Brock Christian Church by Reverend E. C. Davis on April 13, 1941, and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Lutheran Church by Pastor Walter Hummel on October 23, 1949.

Shirley graduated from Brock Consolidated High School in 1946. She attended Peru State College. On February 28, 1948, she married Eldon Dean Neddenriep. They lived most of their married life on the Neddenriep home place southeast of Johnson. Five sons were born to them; John, Thomas, Terry, David, and Lonnie. In 1959 she tolerated polio. Shirley returned to Peru State College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1985. She retired from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on October 1, 2005, after 21 years of service in the U.S. Government.

Shirley assisted her husband in his farming operation and in his production and sales of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) breeding swine for 35 years.

As a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday School, was a member of Priscilla Circle, later Ruth-Naomi Circle and past president of WELCA. She belonged to several Extension Clubs, Sundowner’s Club, Auburn Federated Woman’s Club, and was a member of The Johnson Rag staff and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Her hobbies included writing, gardening, quilting, and enjoying her 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

In 2019 due to healthcare considerations she moved into an apartment at the Aviva Woodlands assisted living center in Lincoln. It was there that she passed away following a short illness, having reached the age of 97 years and 5 months.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, parents and step-father, son Thomas Michael Neddenriep, brother Larry Milton Barnes, sister Patricia Ann (Beason) Parde and brother-in-law Harlan Parde.

Shirley is survived by her sons John Neddenriep, Johnson; Terry Neddenriep and wife Marley, Lincoln; David Neddenriep and wife Debra, Omaha; Lonnie Neddenriep and wife Penny, Johnson; 12 grandchildren: Thomas Neddenriep, Parker, CO; Wade Neddenriep and wife Lisa, Waverly; Kyle Neddenriep and wife Jennifer, Indianapolis, IN; Jesse Neddenriep and wife Sarah, Falls City; Shelly and husband Dr. Jacob Christian, Libby, MT; Katie and husband Jim Underwood, Omaha; Tara and husband Craig Lundy, Jamie and husband Andrew Phillips, Rita Neddenriep, all of Lincoln; Mitch Neddenriep and wife Jessica, Johnson; Lindsey and husband Paul Valla, Fremont; and Mark Neddenriep and fiancé Samantha Sivertsen, Johnson; and by 27 great-grandchildren: Abbie and husband Ben Mullins (children Pierce, Perpetua, and Stella) of Osage Beach, MO; Andrew, Nathan, Matthew and Ethan Neddenriep, Falls City; Etta, Tozer, and Levi Valla, Fremont; Austin, Ellie, and Daisy Neddenriep, Waverly; Kaylie and Aubree Phillips, Reed and Claire Lundy, all of Lincoln; Kingston and Olivia Neddenriep, Johnson; Mason Bennet and Dylan Neddenriep, Parker, CO; Logan, Mason, Colton, and Lincoln Christian, Libby, MT; Kyson and Jace Neddenriep, Indianapolis, IN; and Simon and Nora Underwood, Omaha.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran (Hickory Grove) Church. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00. Shirley’s body will be cremated following the service and burial of ashes will be at a later time in the church cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
