Laddie Lea (Behrends) Helms, born on February 27, 1962, in Humboldt, Nebraska, passed away at Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Nebraska, on July 1, 2026. She departed this life surrounded by love after being rushed to the hospital, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, warmth, and service.
Laddie’s early years were spent in southeast Nebraska, where she was nurtured by her parents, Melvin and Louise (Parker) Behrends. She completed her education at Southeast Nebraska Consolidated School, graduating in 1980, and was baptized and confirmed at Stone Church— foundations that imprinted upon her years with values of faith and community. Her commitment to service and her strong work ethic were evident early on, guiding her through a meaningful and accomplished career.
Throughout her professional life, Laddie held positions with Trails End in Rockport, Missouri, and served the State of Nebraska with distinction. She found her true calling in her long and devoted tenure with the United States Postal Service, where she worked as a postal clerk, mail carrier, and later as Postmaster in the towns of Tecumseh, Auburn, and Falls City. Laddie’s dedication to her role saw her become a respected member of the Postal Union, a reflection of her pride in her work and her desire to advocate for her colleagues and community.
Beyond her career, Laddie was known for her zest for life and love of the outdoors. Camping, fishing, and vacationing were among her greatest joys, providing cherished experiences and memories for both herself and those lucky enough to share them with her. Above all, she was happiest in the company of her family, embracing every opportunity to be together and create lasting memories.
Laddie’s life was enriched by the love of her family, who were always at the center of her world. She is survived by her devoted husband, Rick, whose steadfast presence was a constant source of support and companionship. Her children, Courtney DeBuhr (Josh Nincehelser), Kolby (Gavyn) Thomas, and Scott (Trish) Helms, felt her unwavering love and guidance throughout their lives. She was a proud grandmother to Ashtyn Nincehelser, Cody Helms, and Brenden Helms, each of whom was deeply cherished. Laddie is also remembered with affection by her brother, Gene Behrends, and her sisters, Karen Behrends, Lois Behrends, Shelley Behrends, and Linda Arquette. Their bond and shared memories are a testament to a life lived in close-knit harmony.
Laddie was preceded in death by her father and mother Melvin and Louise, and brothers-in-law Don Arquette, Merlin Helms, Don Helms, Terry Helms, and Ross Helms. Though they have gone before her, their influence and the memories they shared with Laddie remain an enduring comfort.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 10, 11:00 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 5:00 to 7:00.
Laddie Lea Helms touched the lives of many with her kindness, her laughter, and her unwavering dedication to those she loved. Her legacy will continue in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know her.
