Carolyn A. Borcher, 82, of Sterling, died Friday night, March 27, 2026, at her home. She was born on September 11, 1943, in Tecumseh to Leonard J. W. and Dorothea (Stake) Steiner. Carolyn graduated from Lewiston High School in 1961 and then attended C.E. School of Commerce in Omaha. On September 18, 1965, she married Stanley Borcher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Burchard and they were blest with five children. She worked at the state capital and in administration, medical records, and scheduling at several area nursing homes, but her primary focus was being a farmwife and mother. Carolyn was a member of the Sterling United Methodist Church until its closing and then attended Hopewell United Methodist Church. She served as church pianist, was Sunday School Superintendent, and 4-H leader. She was a former member of the Johnson County Hospital Board and County Extension Club. For over 30 years she volunteered with the Sterling Rescue Squad.
Survivors include her children, Glenda (Ed) Wallpe, Carrie (Steve) Vyhlidal, Patricia (Steve) Shewmaker, Ken (Marlow) Borcher, and Dean (Ashley) Borcher; grandchildren, Kalin and Miles Wallpe, James and Michael Vyhlidal, Molly Shewmaker, and Garrett Lorenzo; brother, Leonard W. Steiner; in-laws, Verona Neumann, Arlene (Paul) Fell, Wanda Hartman, Donna (Chuck) Burr, Esther (Richard) Halbert, Ann (Mike) Jeffrey, Sharon Borcher, and Don (Marcia) Borcher; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Borcher, who died on June 2, 2024; parents, Leonard and Dorothea Steiner; sister, Arleen (Clarence) Hippen; parents-in-law, Marvin and Glenda Borcher; in-laws, Gerald Hartman and Gary Neumann.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Sterling Community Center with Pastor Ken Tubbesing officiating. Interment will be at the Sterling Cemetery. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. on Friday prior to the funeral. The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from noon until 8:00 P.M. with the family greeting relatives and friends from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
