SUE (HUMMEL) HARRIS
Catherine Susanna Harris, daughter of Alfred “Buzz” and Grace (Reeves) Hummel, was born August 17, 1952, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Sue, as she was known by many, grew up in Brownville, Nebraska where she attended school through the 8th grade. She then graduated from Auburn High School in 1970 and attended Peru State College for one year.
Throughout her life Sue worked in various positions. While still in school she worked as a waitress and cook at the Brownville House. She next worked as a sewing machine operator at the Danny Dare Factory in Auburn before serving for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Tiffany Heights Nursing Home in Mound City, Missouri. Later Sue worked as a telemarketer before retiring for health reasons.
Sue was a member of The Brownville Christian Church. She loved playing word games, sewing, baking (known for her cinnamon rolls!), and children. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang at many weddings and funerals, especially in her early years.
As her health failed, Sue moved to the Valley View Apartments in Auburn. It was there on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, she passed away peacefully at the age of 73 years, 4 months, and 6 days. Her parents, husband Terry Harris, granddaughter Jasmine, and sister Cheryl Carpenter preceded her in death.
Sue is survived by her daughter Samantha Thompson of Council Bluffs, IA; grandchildren Ryan, Harley, and Dakota; brother and sister-in-law Chuck and Emily Hummel of Auburn; aunts Donna Reeves of Maryville, MO and Wynona Hummel of Council Bluffs, IA; uncle Duayne Holland of South Dakota; nieces Angela (Chad) Hoover and Rachael (Adam) Koenig; nephew Keenan Webb; cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, January 3, 11:00 a.m. at the Brownville Christian Church. Visitation with the family will be 9:00 a.m. to service time at the church. Burial of ashes will be on a later date in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to Brownville Christian Church or Brownville Village Theater.
Services are entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
