JEANETTE MARGUERITE (JACKSON) HANSEN

1937 - 2025

Our beloved mother, Jeanette Marguerite (Jackson) Hansen of Brownville, NE passed peacefully at Good Samaritan Society in Auburn, NE on December 2, 2025.

Jeanette was born March 10, 1937, at Saint Catherines Hospital in Omaha, Ne to parents Frederick Ernest Jackson and Josephine Ann (Gilliotti) Jackson. She was named after her father’s favorite movie star Jeanette McDonald. Raised in a small little white house, she remembered that …. “We had tulips that grew alongside of the front porch, they were the first flower I ever drew with a crayon.” …….I never became a movie star, but I can still draw a tulip with a crayon.”

“Mother and father founded a family business in 1942 called Ernie’s South Omaha Fruit Market. Beginning at 12 years, I worked part-time doing a little bit of everything. Putting up displays like Christmas trees, decorations, candy, produce, flowers, pumpkins, etc. It is called merchandising today, but we called it work and my folks taught me well!”

Jeanette graduated from Central High School in 1955. She met her future husband, Martin Hansen, while working at the fruit market. They wed on June 9, 1957, and moved to Millard, Ne for several years. After their daughters Janet and Mary were born, they moved to a home at 62nd & Underwood where they raised their girls and lived until 1993.

In 1976, Jeanette and Martin purchased a historic home at auction in Brownville, NE. The house built in 1864 is known as The Beehive. They spent years driving back and forth on the weekends from Omaha restoring it to its well-deserved glory, eventually living full time there beginning in 1993.

During her time in Brownville, Jeanette served as vice president and president of the Brownville Fine Arts Association starting in 1980 and served on the board for over 10 years. She participated in decorating homes for the Brownville Christmas tours and operated an antique shop inside of the Land Office for several years. She really had a knack for putting interiors together and enjoyed the historical aspect of her home and the town. She spent years researching and putting together her family’s genealogy long before the ease of information access. Driving around the country with Martin to small towns, genealogy centers, and libraries, and lots of letter writing for information.

Jeanette was a wonderful wife to Martin for 62 years and beloved mom to her children, grand and great grandchildren and to her sweet canine companion Macy. She was an excellent cook, and her homemade spaghetti sauce was a prized Sunday night meal. For years her pastimes included studying and collecting antiques which resulted in an extensive pewter collection. We will miss her quiet and welcoming warmth.

Survived by Daughters Janet (Hansen) Kauffman of Scottsdale, AZ and Mary Hansen of Plymouth, MN, Granddaughter Tara Hansen, and Great Granddaughter Levi Lynne Thomas both of Kansas City, KS, Brother Frederick Ernest Jackson, Jr. (Pam Jackson) and younger sister Joanne Marie (Jackson) Harbert (Richard Harbert), plus extended family and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws Martin C. Hansen Sr and Gertrude (Hislop) Hansen, and loving husband Martin Christian Hansen, Jr.

A private family service will be held. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha. ***
