1966 - 2025

James “Jim” Grotrian, a proud fourth-generation southeast Nebraskan whose lifelong commitment to education and community enriched the lives of many, passed away November 3, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was 59 years young.

Jim was born on September 15, 1966, to Paul and Dolores (Harms) Grotrian. He attended Johnson-Brock Public Schools and graduated in 1984, where he was a member of the state basketball tournament team.

Jim devoted more than 30 years to higher education, leadership, and public service, building a legacy defined by collaboration, integrity, and dedication to others. His career included a range of leadership roles in education, legislative relations, planning, and public relations, culminating in two decades of meaningful service at Metropolitan Community College—years he often described as the most rewarding of his professional life.

A graduate of Kearney State College and the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Jim’s professional journey reflected his belief in the power of education to transform communities. He worked across all levels of education, from local classrooms to national partnerships. Known for his steady leadership, Jim built multimillion-dollar budgets, engaged with elected officials, and worked closely with faculty and staff to deliver high-quality career education programs.

Jim also brought his leadership and thoughtful stewardship to public service. He served on the Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Foundation Board, several community advisory committees, and was elected to the Sanitary Improvement District in Cass County.

Beyond his many professional and civic contributions, Jim was happiest when spending time outdoors, working on the family farm, or sharing moments with his beloved wife Lisa and extended family. He especially loved spending time with his nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. His deep roots in Nebraska and his commitment to service leave an enduring mark on the communities he so passionately supported.
