“After serving as the Deputy Assessor for the past six years, the opportunity presented itself to run for the Assessor position,” said Sara Kuhl. “During my time in the office, I have developed a passion for the job and have genuinely enjoyed the work.
“I feel very confident in my ability to step into the Assessor position and carry out the duties and responsibilities it entails. I have also had a great support system from past and present county employees, which has allowed me to gain invaluable knowledge and experience.”
One of Kuhl's primary goals is to continue maintaining fair and equitable property values throughout the county. She also wants to build positive relationships with constituents. “I enjoy when people stop in my office, whether it is simply to say hello or to discuss questions or concerns, and I want to continue being accessible to the people I serve,” Sara said.
“My six years as Deputy Assessor have given me hands-on experience and a thorough understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of the office. I have gained knowledge of the assessment process, worked with property owners and county employees, and had the opportunity to understand the scope of the Assessor's responsibilities. I would like to see the office move toward a more paperless solution,. I think there are opportunities to improve efficiency through technology while continuing to provide good service to property owners.”
Kuhl said continuing education is an important part of maintaining her certification. She plans to attend educational workshops annually, as well as webinars put on by the Nebraska Department of Revenue. “These workshops and webinars provide opportunities to stay current with assessment requirements and provide the required 60 continuing education hours during each four-year term.”
She took her certification test in August 2020. During the first term as Assessor, there are two required courses through the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO). Kuhl has completed both of those courses within the past two years.
Kuhl has three children, Cooper, Blakely and Burke who attend Johnson County Central Schools. “I enjoy cheering them on at all of their sporting events and helping coach their teams,” said Sara. In her free time, Sara enjoys golfing and spending time with her family.
“I was born and raised in Johnson County and have lived here my entire life. Being a lifelong resident gives me a strong connection to the community and the people I would serve as Assessor,” Kuhl concluded.
