The 2026 Brownville Fine Arts Association 2026 Speaker Series wraps up with two presentations during Old Time Autumn.
Both will be at Schoolhouse Art Gallery, 427 Main St.
Saturday, Oct. 10: G. William Quatman at 1 p.m.
A member of the Civil War Round Table of Kansas City, Quatman will discuss his book, A Young General and The Fall of Richmond: The Life and Career of Godfrey Weitzel.
Published in 2015, it profiles the Union general who captured Richmond, Va., the Confederate capital April 3, 1865. Six days later Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Va.
Weitzel (1835–1884) was a German immigrant from Cincinnati and West Point graduate. He was commander of the 25th Corps, the Union Army’s sole all-black unit. Weitzel later had careers in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and lighthouse engineering.
The Civil War Round Table of Kansas City was founded in 1958. Former President Truman provided the leadership to establish it.
Quatman is senior vice president and General Counsel for Burns & McDonnell in Kansas City. He is a Designated Design-Build Professionals national director and is currently vice chair. Quatman lives in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City, Mo., and is married with three children and two grandsons.
Sunday, Oct. 11: Dale Gilbert at noon
The author of Thunder on Bays Mountain will present the real-life tale of Rev. Green Berry “G.B.” Gilbert (1839-1902), his great-great-grandfather. Green Berry Gilbert lived through the Civil War, raised a family and founded a church under the guidance of God on Bays Mountain.
Published in 2021, the book has been called a deep and personal look at American history during a time of great difficulty and strife, highlighting the strength and community needed to survive.
As Gilbert states, “From the time his first ancestor arrived in America from England, Green Berry Gilbert, like so many, endured hardship, loss and the fight for daily survival in the 1800s. This book details how they lived, how they worked and even recipes for what they ate.”
Meeting his future wife, Amanda, was a blessing in Green Berry’s life that he cherished until his death.
Forced to decide loyalties during the Civil War, Green Berry and his older brother, John, join a local Confederate unit in Hawkins County, Tenn., and proceed to be involved in a number of major battles and skirmishes that took place during this American conflict.
