As we roll into October, we reach one of the most important times in our state, that being the harvest season. We face many uncertainties and challenges right now, and with a pivotal election a month away, we have many important choices to make in the near future.
To help agricultural producers statewide, Governor Jim Pillen of Nebraska issued two Executive Orders on Thursday, September 24, 2026, providing temporary (90-day) relief amid rising diesel costs, fuel pressures, and harvest season challenges.
The first Executive Order addressed a diesel tax relief and pause. Highway-registered vehicles can hold, sell, or use untaxed (dyed) diesel fuel without state fines or penalties. Diesel taxes paid while transporting grain) and livestock on state roads are eligible for a refund by filing Form 84AG with the Nebraska Department of Revenue. Producers should keep fuel receipts to document eligible fuel purchases for reimbursement. This applies to qualifying agriculture transport, including pickups and service trucks going to the field for harvest. Federal restrictions on dyed diesel on public roads still apply, but the state has asked the Internal Revenue Service for matching relief.
