Field Day Shows Farmers the Payoff of Cover Crops, No-Till Practices

A discussion on conservation, soil health and a tabletop rainfall simulator drew area farmers together Wednesday for a hands-on look at how soil management decisions affect what happens when rain hits the ground.

This was part of a soil health field day held at Daryl Obermeyer’s farm near Brownville through the Nebraska Conservation Mentorship Network. Obermeyer is a mentor in the program.

Elizabeth Gray, assistant state soil scientist for the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in Nebraska, led the demonstration, which compared soil samples from no-till fields against those from convention ally tilled ground.
