Jim Weeks, head boys basketball coach at Auburn Public Schools, was named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) Coach of the Year on July 1 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was nominated by the Nebraska Coaches Association.
Weeks was one of eight finalists selected from 17 sports. He said the award takes winning records into account, along with state championships and state qualifier appearances, but that it represents more than that.
“This is a ‘we’ award, not a ‘me’ award,” Weeks said. “We have great players, amazing assistant coaches and a community that supports and likes sports. It takes all three to have a successful program.”
Weeks also praised Auburn Public Schools students, staff, and administration for being great supporters. He has coached at Auburn for 10 years, following two years in Axtell, Kansas, and 24 years in Beatrice. He also spent four years coaching at the collegiate level.
Auburn boys basketball has advanced to the state tournament 29 times, with Weeks leading the team there seven times in the last eight seasons. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs won state titles in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
