Judy Heidzig is retiring after nearly 23 years leading Valley View Apartments and the Housing Authority in Auburn, a stretch she says brought enough stories to fill a book.
Heidzig has served as executive director since August 2003. The role, she said, has meant overseeing day-to-day operations, processing applications and securing funding.
The complex relies on a federal subsidy as its main source of operating income, along with rent payments from residents. Capital funds are awarded separately and fluctuate based on the facility meeting certain operating standards, Heidzig said.
Valley View originally served only elderly and disabled residents. The complex now accepts low-income residents of any age.
“I’ve often said I should have kept a journal, because I could have written a pretty good book,” Heidzig said of her time there.
Several memories stand out. But around 2010, a young man who is a disabled veteran and recovering addict came into her office seeking housing. He still lives at Valley View today, Heidzig said, and is approaching 16 years of sobriety. Other current residents have also moved in after completing treatment at centers like Mission Field in Nebraska City and are doing well, she said.
“I believe in second chances,” Heidzig said, adding that not every resident who received one was able to take advantage of it.
Valley View offers housing and hosts informal gatherings on occasion, including monthly potlucks and a Christmas party with treats, games and music. Residents have access to a library and puzzles, though Heidzig said fewer residents play cards than they once did.
Heidzig is handing the director role to Alanna Petersen. She plans to focus on continued improvements and building on the great work Judy has done in her role.
In retirement, Heidzig said she plans to spend more time in her yard and focus on storm-cleanup at her home, which sustained minor damage during the recent storms. She also plans to spend time with her family.
