Auburn, NE — The Nemaha County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents and businesses to a rise in check fraud involving payments sent through the U.S. mail.
Investigators report that criminals are stealing checks not only from mailboxes and collection boxes, but also from destination endpoints such as business mailrooms and delivery points after the mail has been delivered. These checks are then altered or fraudulently deposited for financial gain. Recent activity in the region has prompted this warning.
How it happens
In many cases, stolen checks are chemically altered to change the payee or amount. Others are deposited using forged endorsements or used to produce counterfeit checks.
Who is affected
Both individuals and businesses may be impacted, particularly those who regularly send or receive payments by mail. Consequences can include financial loss, delayed payments, and account disruptions.
Prevention tips
The Nemaha County Sheriff's Office encourages the public to:
Consider electronic payment options when possible
Avoid leaving outgoing mail in mailboxes overnight
Deposit checks inside a post office or secure collection box before the final daily pickup
Retrieve incoming mail promptly and do not allow it to sit unattended at delivery locations
Use permanent, gel-based ink pens that are more difficult to alter
Monitor bank accounts frequently for suspicious activity
Collaboration with financial institutions
The Sheriff's Office is working closely with local financial institutions to identify, investigate, and help prevent this type of fraud. Authorities are aware of recent incidents in the region consistent with these methods.
Nemaha County Sheriff Brent Lottman said financial institutions play an important role in detecting unusual check activity, monitoring accounts, and educating customers on safe payment practices.
"Our partnership with local banks is essential. Timely information sharing helps protect the public and supports ongoing investigations," said Lottman.
Reporting suspicious activity
Anyone who believes they may be a victim of check fraud or mail theft should contact the Nemaha County Sheriff's Office. Reports may also be filed with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Lottman said, "this type of crime can be prevented. We encourage residents to stay alert, safeguard mailed payments, and review their accounts regularly."
