“I’m just doing what I’m supposed to be doing,” said Mason Amundson, a physical education teacher for grades K-12 at Sterling Public Schools. Amundson was the recipient of the Golden Apple Award sponsored by Channel 10-11 and Doane University, which is presented to a deserving teacher in the Channel 10-11 viewing area because of their special impact on the students. Channel 10-11 news anchor Taryn Vanderford presented Amundson with his award.
Amundson is the Junior High coach for football, basketball, and track. Tracy Pella nominated Mr. Amundson for the Golden Apple Award because Mr. A offered weightlifting last summer for Junior High and High School students and through the weightlifting program, helped Jesse and Tracy Pella’s son, Cooper, 14, gain in confidence. Since birth, Cooper has had issues with his eyesight. Amundson also encouraged Cooper to become the student manager for the junior high football squad. Cooper also became a member of the junior high basketball and track teams.
“Cooper has a positive outlook and attitude,” said Amundson. “Cooper has a lot of heart and determination.
