Author and artist Kaylene Powell spoke Friday, May 8, at The Cenacle to a packed audience, reading excerpts from her writing and showcasing her visual art.
A Nebraska-based author, Powell has worked as an educator in English as a Second Language.
Powell is the author of the memoir Heaven Help Me, which addresses childhood trauma and her healing journey. She has written multiple cross-genre works spanning memoir, poetry and fiction.
During the event, Powell said her experiences with abuse and recovery shaped her voice as a writer and her commitment to storytelling.
“I am going to tell my story so that other people can benefit,” Powell said. “This is a story of surviving, but also thriving.”
Powell credited her faith, storytelling, and family for helping guide her through recovery. She also noted that her brother, Nate Powell, is a pastor at Auburn Christian Church, and that themes of faith and his sermons inspired her poetry.
Books by Powell are available for purchase at The Cenacle.
