Thank you Volunteer Heroes!

Volunteers are the quiet backbone of any strong community, showing up week after week, asking for nothing in return. In honor of National Volunteer Week, we're spotlighting a few remarkable people from Nemaha and Johnson Counties, nominated by you, our readers, for the time and dedication they give to make life better for those around them.
Thank you Volunteer Heroes!

Lauren Vinson, Auburn

What drew you to volunteering and serving your community?
What first drew me in was being involved in FBLA in high school. Community service was a big part of that, and I wanted to be involved in my community.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that so much of what happens in our town only operates because of incredible volunteers. I have two kids going in opposite directions all the time, but I’m always looking for ways to give back. I’m 34, born and raised here, married to my high school sweetheart, and we’re raising our kids here. I love this community and the people in it, and I hope my kids will raise their kids here someday.
Can you share a moment that made you feel the impact of your work?
I serve on the Calvert Elementary PTO board, and we see that impact all the time. Kids are so joyful and honest—you really see what you’ve put in come back tenfold. Whether it’s camps or things we’re able to provide, their reactions are genuine. You’ll hear it from them whether they love something or not.
I’m also the current Chamber president and have served on the board for several years. It’s been amazing to see how far the Chamber has come—how much the events have grown!
What does showing up for your community mean to you?
It really comes back to loving where you live. I love Auburn, I love the people, and I love being part of something good.
It’s also about stepping up. People my age need to start giving back so those who have been doing it for decades can take a break and enjoy it. Of course, they’ll probably keep helping—they love it!
