Inscribed above the north entrance of the Nebraska State Capitol are the words: “The salvation of the state is the watchfulness of the citizen.” With that principle in mind, the Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs (NFWC) launched the Sophomore Pilgrimage in 1984 to educate students about the three branches of state government and Nebraska’s unique unicameral system.

This year, four Auburn Public Schools sophomores — Rylee Dotson, Nora Jacobitz, Maxwell Johnson and Cale Zentner — joined 34 students from across Nebraska for a day of learning at the Capitol.

NFWC State President Kathy Huggins said the program is designed to open students’ eyes to their roles as informed and engaged citizens.
