Huskey Will Run at Iowa Western

Huskey Will Run at Iowa Western
Trevin Huskey, center, signed a letter of intent to compete in cross country and track at Iowa Western Community College this fall. Sitting in the front row watching him sign his letter are his parents, Angie Huskey, left, and Nick Huskey, right. In the back are Trevin's siblings, Ashton Huskey and Hayden Huskey holding sister Holly Huskey.

“I feel very excited to say that I will be continuing my athletic career at the collegiate level. It’s like a dream come true to be able to continue doing what I love,” said Trevin Huskey as he signed a letter of intent to compete for Iowa Western Community College this fall.
Huskey said he chose Iowa Western mainly because of their amazing two-year Associate Degree program for Aviation Maintenance Technology.   “I visited their campus as a junior and knew that is where I wanted to be.
“What I enjoy most about competing in cross country and track is the great distance competition in southeast Nebraska. Running with these guys doesn’t really feel like competition but more of a friendly rivalry of physical and mental toughness where we cheer for each other, but see who can outkick the other in each race.”
Huskey's favorite track event is the two-mile. “Mostly because I like the fast pace of an extended run. It might seem like a long race on a track (8 laps) but, honestly, it gives me the perfect amount of time to figure out the strategy of what I need to do to win the race and continue to improve my time.”
For his senior track season, Trevin said he is looking forward to running even better times than last year, to have fun in the process, and to break some records while “living up” every last moment of his high school running career.
Last track season Huskey got a third place district medal in the two-mile and qualified for the State Track Championship, running a personal record time in a rainy 2-mile race. For his senior year of cross country, Trevin got District Runner-Up and which qualified him for the State Cross Country Championship. There, Trevin finished 7th, earning a state medal as well as beating the JCC school record, previously held by Sam Saldivar.
“I ran with some of the best kids in the state at that meet and it was a great feeling to be able to earn a state medal there!” Huskey said. “My teammates are wonderful to train with and we’ve built a solid team bond. Now that I am a senior, I lead the distance group, but there are some underclassmen who push me to stay ahead of the pack.”
Huskey hasn't had any serious injuries during my cross country or track seasons, however he suffered a significant MCL strain that required him to stop wrestling for the last month of the season. “ As a competitor, this was very difficult, but I realized for the long term health of my knee and future running career that it was necessary. My knee is feeling much better now, but I’m still taking extra care to protect and fully heal it.”
Huskey has mixed feelings about competing at the collegiate level. “Both are good feelings, but I know I won't be the top athlete coming in right away so that will be a new kind of feeling. Looking forward, I do want to look into and maybe try the 3k Steeplechase, 3000M race, and the 5000M race. I ran a half marathon this year and would like to continue to do those, as well.”
Marc Bierbaum, the director of Cross Country and Track & Field at IWCC, will be Huskey's coach for the upcoming cross country and track season. Huskey has met with him multiple times over the past year. Bierbaum has been at IWCC for about five years and has produced many national team titles and individual national champions.
In preparation for competing in track at college, Huskey will continue to work hard and put in the miles during this senior season of track.
“Over the summer, I will continue to run and plan to compete in several 10k and half-marathon races. I will also attend a team running camp prior to the start of the fall semester at IWCC,” said Huskey.
“After earning my Associates Degree and my Airframe and Powerplant licenses, my goal is to either enlist in the United States Air Force and serve our country as an Aviation Technician or to work for Duncan Aviation as an Airframe Mechanic.”
Huskey completed an internship with Duncan Aviation last summer, and has secured another internship for this coming summer.  “This experience has been extremely beneficial and makes me very excited to enter this career field!” he concluded.
