Changes Coming to ACT Test

A long-standing benchmark for college readiness is undergoing national changes. Beginning with spring 2026 testing, the ACT will be shorter, with fewer questions, shorter reading passages and adjustments to multiple-choice options. Composite scores will also be calculated using only English, reading and math results.
Auburn High School sophomores will take the Pre-ACT and juniors will take the ACT on March 24.
Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Auburn Public Schools Samantha Wehenkel said the test will be shorter due to national changes.
“The test will have 44 fewer questions, so test takers will have more time to complete each question,” Wehenkel said.
She noted that classroom test preparation will not change, and students taking the exam for the first time will not notice a major difference in how they prepare.
Scores may appear different because composite scores will now be based only on English, math and reading. Nebraska still requires students to take the science and writing sections as well, but they will not be included in the composite score.
All Nebraska students are required to take the ACT as a benchmarking tool.
Wehenkel said the best ways for students to prepare are to register on the ACT website to access practice tests, get adequate sleep and nutrition before test day and pay attention during classroom test preparation.
