Steve Masur Retires After 30 Years as a Firefighter
Steve Masur, right, was recognized for 30 years of service to the Sterling Fire Department with a homemade decorative plaque presented by Fire Chief Jason Ebbers.

Steve Masur officially retired as a member of the Sterling Fire Department following 30 years of dedicated service and was the recipient of a homemade decorative plaque during the Sterling Fire Department’s Appreciation Supper.
“I wanted to serve as a firefighter for the Sterling Fire Department because I value being part of a close-knit community and contributing in a meaningful, hands-on way. Living in a smaller community like Sterling, you truly see the impact one person can make. I was drawn to the opportunity to protect and serve neighbors, friends, and local families during some of their most vulnerable moments,” said Masur.
Masur served as President of the Sterling Fire Department for about 10 years and was one of the firefighters who initiated Oktoberfest and Spaghetti Suppers to raise money for new equipment and to support local families in need.
Over the past 30 years, Masur has seen several significant changes within the Sterling Fire Department. One of the biggest milestones was the construction of the new fire hall, which increased space, organization, and functionality for both equipment and training.
“Having a modern facility has made a noticeable difference in how efficiently we can operate and prepare for calls,” said Masur. “Firefighting tools, protective gear, and safety standards have evolved over the years, and the department has made it a priority to upgrade equipment whenever possible to ensure the safety of our firefighters and the community.”
Masur indicated that membership has changed over time as well.” Like many volunteer departments, we’ve seen members come and go, but the commitment to service has remained strong. New members bring fresh energy and ideas, while longtime members provide experience and mentorship. That balance has helped the department continue to grow and adapt.”
Although Masur couldn’t remember all the specific  awards by name, he has been honored to receive some recognition over the years. “With that being said, the greatest reward has always been serving the community and working alongside a dedicated team.
“My goal with the Sterling Fire Department was always simple: to do my part to serve, protect, and keep our community safe. From the beginning, I wanted to be someone others could rely on during emergencies and difficult moments. I also hoped to contribute to building a strong, dependable team within the department—one that valued training, accountability, and looking out for one another.
“Over the years, my goals grew to include mentoring younger firefighters and helping pass along the knowledge and experience I had gained. In a volunteer department, teamwork and shared responsibility are everything. I wanted to make sure the next generation was prepared, confident, and committed to serving with integrity. Looking back over the past 30 years, I truly feel I have fulfilled those goals.
“I’ve had the privilege of helping people during some of the most challenging times in their lives and of working alongside dedicated men and women who care deeply about this community,” said Masur. “While no one does this job alone, I’m proud of the role I played and grateful for the opportunity to make a positive difference in Sterling. . . Being part of a team that is willing to drop everything to serve others is something I will always be proud of.”
