AHS to Send Three Wrestlers to State Tournament
BULLDOG LUCIA CAMPBELL heaves her opponent. She earned a silver medal at districts, sending her to state for her senior year.

The Auburn Girls Wrestling Team saw three finishers in the top four at the Class B-2 District tournament in Lakeview on February 6 and 7. Hadley Mazzula, Addison Henry and Lucia Campbell will each make the trip to Omaha for the State Tournament February 17 and 18.

Mazzulla, who had been wrestling at 100 pounds all season, bumped up to 105 for the district tournament. She pinned both Alexa Gonzalez of Central Valley and Bayler Clay of Ansley-Litchfield in her first and second rounds, then won by a 4-0 decision against Paisley Hoffman in the semi-finals. Ila Jurgens of Gibben was Mazzula’s final opponent, who she pinned 1:49 into the second period. The 26 team points in 4 wins brings her record up to 41-1 going into the State Tournament for a third attempt at gold.

Henry wrestled six matches in order to punch her ticket on Friday and Saturday. After a quick pin against Khloe McNeff of Central City, she progressed through the next round due to a medical forfeit against Chloe Kokes of Ord. She then pinned Teela Bleich of Battle Creek in the first period, but lost her semi-finals match against Dakota Gress by fall. On the opposite side of the bracket, Henry pinned Ashlyn Alexander of Falls City in the first period, and followed that up with another pin against Lilly Kester of Summerland, earning herself third place and a record of 45-5 headed into State for her second time. At 145 pounds, Campbell pinned her first three opponents, Madilynn Hays of Axtell, Makaylah McCartney of Aurora and Payton Whited of Ord. Campbell then met Taylor Ahlman of Battle Creek in the finals. Campbell put up a good fight but, late in the third period, lost by fall. With a silver medal and a record of 42-3, Campbell will be making her third and final appearance at State. Also earning points for the Bulldogs, but missing the cut for state were Veronica Housley with seven points, Kensley Snodgrass with six, Tayla Jones with five, and Skyler Reiman with three.
