Peru City Council Approves Emergency Water Line Repair

The Peru City Council met in an emergency session Wednesday evening, January 21 to address a water line break at 700 Washington Street that could not be shut off without disrupting water service to the entire city.
Mayor Katy Novak called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Councilmembers Rachel Brown, Theresa Westfall and Josh Whisler were present. Councilmember Brent Brown was absent.
Maintenance Supervisor Donald Roberts told the council the damaged line could not be isolated without shutting off water citywide, which could risk additional breaks when service is restored, especially in cold weather. He recommended a “hot tap” repair, allowing crews to install a new valve while the water line remains active.
Roberts requested authorization to install a 4-inch Hydra-Stop insertion valve from Municipal Pipe Service on the line along Seventh Street to control the break at the Washington Street address.
After brief discussion about the repair process, equipment and warranties, the council voted 3-0 to approve the emergency installation. Westfall made the motion, seconded by Whisler.
