Beau Thomas of AHS Wins 2025 Nebraska Student Script Competition

Disconnected by Beau Thomas has captured the 2025 Nebraska Student Film Competition. Thomas is a junior at Auburn High School.
The scenario opens the conversation about artificial intelligence and how it affects teens’ connections and relationships. It explores depression, connection and healing.
“Beau’s script is incredible. When Beau was announced as a semifinalist, I knew he had a very good chance of winning the competition due to his relatable and modern ideas. I really enjoyed supporting him as he worked with industry professionals, and I’m excited to see the film,” noted Jessica Paschal, Auburn language arts teacher. Thomas developed the concept in the Creative Writing Class.

Thomas replied to the following questions:
What was your biggest takeaway from the competition?
This competition solidified my confidence in both writing and in being able to overcome great odds. I entered thinking it was a long shot that little old me could win anything of the sort!
What part of the script-writing process was most difficult?
Time was a hard one for this competition. I had to balance school, extracurriculars, work and writing out my script. It taught me a lot about responsibility and time management!
What surprised you about film production?
How diverse everything was. There were people for every job under the sun, from social media managers to lighting experts!
Regarding film production, what did you enjoy the most?
I loved the community and sense of teamwork in the environment--maybe it was because I was a local celebrity as the teen writer, but everyone was so friendly.
Currently, what do you plan to do after high school? Did this competition clarify/solidify any of your plans?
I’ve always wanted to do something creative, but this really brought the idea of going into filmmaking to the forefront. I’m not ready to put all my eggs in that one basket, but I’m notably more sure of myself in potentially pursuing it in the future.

After being named a semifinalist last fall, Thomas collaborated with a script-writing team and presented his scenario to a judging panel. The film will be released in the future with no date set at this time.
