Southeast NE Abnormally Dry in First 2026 Report

Note: The following is based on conditions through Tuesday morning, Jan. 6.

For the first time since Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Johnson and Nemaha counties, as well as the entire region, has returned to abnormally dry status.

The initial 2026 University of Nebraska Drought Monitor was released the morning of Jan. 8. Southeast Nebraska was among 55.51 percent of the Cornhusker State in the first stage of the drought. There was 31.20 percent in moderate drought, 10.91 percent in severe drought while 2.38 percent was drought-free. None of the state was listed as extreme or exceptional drought.
