Fatal Accident Near Sterling on January 2

According to the office of Johnson County Attorney Ben Beethe, on Friday, January 2, 2026 at 1:21 a.m., the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call for a single vehicle accident approximately one mile west of Sterling, in Johnson County NE. The sole occupant of a 2005 Dodge Ram, 74-year old James Young of rural Adams, Nebraska, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The eastbound vehicle left the roadway and rolled at least once, according to Beethe. There were no witnesses. The seat belt was in use. The use of alcohol or excessive speed are unknown at this time. The accident is being investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol. Sterling Fire and Sterling Rescue responded to the scene.
