The Sterling Lady Jets split a pair of games over the holiday stretch, dropping a close road contest to Pawnee City before rebounding with an upset win over Mead at home.
Sterling fell 52-47 to the Pawnee City Lady Indians on December 30 after a strong first half but a difficult third quarter. The Lady Jets trailed 17-14 after the first quarter, then took control in the second period by outscoring Pawnee City 17-5 to build a 31-22 halftime lead. Momentum shifted after the break as Sterling was limited to just three points in the third quarter, while Pawnee City scored 13 to take a 35-34 edge. Both teams shot well in the fourth quarter, but Pawnee City’s 17 points sealed the win.
Kynli Portwood led Sterling with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Justice Currie added 14 points, and Taylor Truscott scored 11. Bryleigh Crouse finished with seven points and six rebounds. Head coach Josh Pfeiffer said rebounding proved to be the difference, despite improved shooting from his team.
