With the second session of the 109th Nebraska Legislature convening Wednesday, Jan. 7, the Nemaha Valley Observer staff reached out to District 1 Sen. Robert Hallstrom of Syracuse to obtain a prospectus on the upcoming Unicameral.
What have you been doing to prepare for the 2026 session: Most recently, I have been working on legislation that I will be introducing in 2026. I also participated in Interim Study Resolution hearings earlier this fall that were conducted by the Judiciary and Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committees on which I serve.
Major issues you believe will be facing the Unicameral in 2026: The major issues facing the Legislature in 2026 will include addressing an estimated $471 million budget shortfall and continuing efforts to bring about meaningful and sustainable property tax relief. I will also be promoting legislation to address issues impacting rural workforce housing, rural health care and childcare.
