Auburn’s Unified Bowling Moves to District Play While It Builds Community
David Sharp bowls with Auburn’s Unified team at Lanes End in Auburn on November 24 . His team partner is his brother Nathan.

Auburn Public Schools’ Unified Bowling is giving students of all abilities a chance to compete, connect and grow during its fast-paced fall season.

In Unified Bowling, students with disabilities serve as the primary athletes while their general education peers act as partners on each team. Auburn currently fields four Unified teams, most with four students who rotate throughout competition.

“The differently abled students are the athletes, and the general education students are their partners,” Coach April Dickerson explained. Dickerson serves as a life skills educator at Auburn Public Schools. “We have four teams, but we’re all one big team. Every unified team has to include at least one student with special needs, and that’s really where the ‘Unified’ name comes from.”
