The Omaha Public Power District held an open house at Johnson County Central High School to introduce the new smart meters, AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure), which will be installed in several areas throughout the district during December, including about 98 in Tecumseh.
A soft-launch of about 6,000 AMI meters were installed in some areas with dense tree cover that have more power outages than average. Now, OPPD is expanding the updates to include a certain amount of the new meters in some areas around Omaha and in Tecumseh and Peru.
“We want to make sure we get a good handle on the system before we do mass deployment,” said Field Supervisor Jon Willey. “Residential installations will be done by Allegiant and we will do the commercial and industrial installations ourselves.”
