Boden Drove Sterling School Bus for 26 Years
Ron Boden was honored for his 26 years of service.

“It is always safety first,” said Ron Boden of Sterling, who was honored for his 26 years of service as a bus driver for Sterling Public Schools.
According to Sterling Principal Jacob Davenport, the District could always rely on Ron Boden. “The kids, staff and community love him. He always makes time to talk to everyone on a personal level,” said Davenport. “The night we honored him at a volleyball game, a massive crowd came to show their support and appreciation for his years of service. It’s a true testament  to what he means to this community.”
Boden received two plaques during a reception held at Sterling Public Schools. One of the plaques featured all the names of the students on his bus route. Another plaque honored the proud 1959 graduate of Sterling Public Schools for his dedication and ability to make connections.
Known for his tireless work ethic, Ron also stands as one of the Sterling Jets greatest supporters, rarely missing a home athletic event. His service and spirit have left a lasting mark on the school and community.
Boden began driving a school bus for Sterling Public Schools while his wife, Marilyn, was taking cancer treatments. His wife, who also drove for the school, encouraged Ron to get his CDL license so he could drive her route when she wasn’t feeling well.
Boden said his daily bus route was about 40 miles. “I’ve never had an accident in my life,” said Boden. He only had one breakdown while he was completing his route. All he had to do was call the school and they came out and took the students to school.
Regardless of the weather conditions, Boden said he never left a student’s residence until he knew the students were safely in their homes. Boden considers himself to have a lot of patience as well as being person who likes to stay on schedule.
When it comes to any disciplinary actions of students, Boden said he always stopped the bus and would tell the students, “You’ve got rules and I’ve got rules. If I have to keep looking back in the mirror to see what you students are doing, then I can’t keep my eyes on the road.”
Boden has enjoyed taking volleyball and basketball players to Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln for state tournaments, elementary field trips and high school academic competitions. “I’ve been to places I’ve never been before and I learn a few things on these trips too,” said Ron.
“This is another chapter in my life,” said Boden of his retirement as a bus driver.  “I’m always on the go, my health is good, mentally and physically. I can still throw hay bales at 84 years old.”
Boden still farms and plans to continue supplying horse enthusiasts in the surrounding area with hay.
