For Dennis Anderson of Auburn, serving in Vietnam wasn’t just a duty—it was a test of endurance, courage, and survival. Drafted into the Army at age 20, Anderson spent a year in the Central Highlands, San Juan Hill region of Vietnam, performing long-range reconnaissance patrols (LRRP) in seven-man teams, navigating dangerous terrain, and facing threats from all sides.
I met Dennis through a connection at the Nemaha County Veterans Service Office. Gene Mace, a veteran himself and now retired after 30 years with Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), continues to connect and serve others in the area.
Mace noted, “We are very lucky to have a supportive structure with our county commissioners. A lot of counties are not able to offer the services we do to vets like Dennis in our area. We provide transportation, camaraderie, and connection to help them access services with the VA.”
