Students Learn How City Utilities Keep Auburn and Peru Running

Auburn and Johnson-Brock fourth graders got an inside look at how the City of Auburn keeps the lights on, the water clean, and the toilets flushing during a hands-on tour of the community’s utility departments last week.

City staff from the wastewater, water, and electric plants walked students through every step of the process — from underground wells to household taps, and from massive diesel engines to the power lines that keep homes and schools running.

At the wastewater treatment plant, operator Bob Wentz explained how “flushable” wipes aren’t truly flushable and can clog sewer systems. “We spend a lot of time clearing lines because of things that should never go down the toilet,” he said. “Even the brands that say ‘flushable’ don’t break down like toilet paper.”
