Nebraska District 1 State Senator Bob Hallstrom attended the October 21 Johnson County Commissioners meeting. Toward the end of the meeting, he heard concerns of the county officials.’
County Highway Superintendent Matt Schaardt began with his concern about the County Bridge Match program which provides 55% state funding of construction costs of replacing or repairing bridges. According to Schaardt, the program was supposed to continue through 2029 but he has been notified that the program will now end after next year.
“We’ve got to find a way to keep that program going,” Schaardt stressed. “There are 1,045 bridges in your district, Senator Hallstrom. A lot of small counties rely on that. . . Southeast Nebraska has more bridges than out west. It’s a big deal. We have 152 bridges in our county alone.”
