Johnson County Central Schools’ board of education passed a resolution to execute a contract to purchase real estate in a 5-1 vote at their August 13 meeting. Board member Dan Jones voted no on this resolution. The board agreed to purchase Outlot D in the Shawnee Ridge Addition to Tecumseh from David and Suzanne Wilson at a price of $800,000. The real estate was purchased in the preparation for a future school bond election.
Board member Sarah Weber asked what would happen to the land if a school bond doesn’t pass. Superintendent Jon Rother explained that the property could be sold. Board member Jon Schmid said he is tired of waiting. “We need to focus on building and focus on what Boyd Jones can do for us,” said Schmid.
Jones was concerned about buying land to build a Pre-K-8 building and still having to make improvements in the high school building as well. Board President Kim Wellensiek felt that if the board wanted to purchase this land, the board should just go ahead and purchase the land instead of waiting until September to give the Wilsons time to evaluate their financial situation before year end.
