Crawford Recalls RFK’s Campaign Tour of SE Nebraska

Dennis Crawford of Lincoln and his daughter Dr. Laura Crawford were the guest speakers at the Monday Night at the Museum presentation on June 23 at the Johnson County Historical Society Museum. The topic of their presentation was the primary election campaign trail of Robert F. Kennedy for the presidency against Eugene McCarthy in 1968.

The presentation was based on Crawford’s book “Robert F. Kennedy: The Road Not Taken.” The campaign trail started when Ted Sorensen invited Robert F. Kennedy to campaign in Nebraska. Crawford recalled that the University of Nebraska’s Coliseum was packed and the crowd went crazy.

The first campaign stop was in Beatrice. Following his tour of Beatrice, Kennedy wanted to visit the Beatrice State Development Center so he could spend time with the underprivileged and disabled children living in that facility. The BSDC administrators allowed Kennedy to take his dog, Freckles, in the facility with him.
