With the water restrictions put in place by Auburn’s Board of Public Works, the watering of grass and lawns has been prohibited. This goes for the football field at Auburn High School, as well, but thanks to an anonymous donor, the field will be watered throughout the summer.
Auburn Public School Board President Laura Osborne commented on the donation, saying “It is the goal of the school to prevent injury to the student-athletes playing on the field, as well as to maintain the investment made by taxpayers in the district. We greatly appreciate the cooperation from all the parties involved.” With the donated water, APS plans to water the field in five different zones by connecting a five-thousand gallon tanker into the sprinkler system, which will run for 15 minutes in the evening. Depending on how much rain the area gets, the field may require up to two or three of those trucks per week. “If it rains, we aren’t going to use the water,” Superintendent David Patton explained, “The whole time we were getting it set up, it was raining, so we haven’t really needed it until now.”
The watering will continue until enough rain is received to lift the BPW restrictions, or until the season for watering is concluded.
