Bulldogs Repeat as Wayne State Holiday Tourney Champs

The Auburn boys basketball team picked up four wins last week, three of which came in the Wayne State Holiday Tournament. The tournament, which started on Monday December 28, featured teams mostly from the Wayne area. Last year, the Bulldogs defeated Hartington Cedar Catholic to claim the tournament championship. This year, Auburn’s first matchup would be with the Indians of Winnebago.

Freshman Maverick Binder got things going for the Bulldogs against Winnebago. The freshman point guard has been put in a different role than he is used to with his older brother Cam being Auburn’s main ball handler. Instead Maverick has been tasked with being an off guard and a spot up shooter, which he seems to be adjusting well to as he nailed two three-pointers in the first quarter to give the Bulldogs the lead. Once shots from outside began to fall, Auburn’s inside players composed of seniors Daniel Frary and Cade Patzel as well as junior Bret Baltensperger were able to score at the rim. The trio of big men scored 28 of Auburn’s 49 points in a 49-36 victory over Winnebago.
