Bulldogs Make Elmwood-Murdock Their Second Victim as Season Gets Rolling

With a 69-26 win over Weeping Water to open the 2020-21 season, the Auburn Bulldogs returned home to beat the Knights of Elmwood-Murdock 61-23 on Saturday, December 12. Last season, the Bulldogs defeated the Knights 72-40 as the third of 29 wins during the 2019-20 season.

Without junior post Bret Baltensperger, senior Cade Patzel filled the vacant starting position for the Bulldogs. Patzel, who is versatile enough to be effective from the perimeter as well as in the post, started a number of games last season for Auburn’s 2020 state championship team.

Against the Knights, senior point guard Cam Binder started things off with a three-pointer off an assist from classmate Daniel Frary. Binder, who recently committed to the University of Nebraska at Kearney for basketball, would finish the game shooting 5 of 7 from beyond the arch. Cam’s cousin Ryan Binder followed the early three with a steal and basket of his own. Off a missed three pointer, Frary grabbed an offensive rebound and scored his first points of the game on a putback, giving the Bulldogs a 9-0 lead in the first quarter.

After an Elmwood-Murdock timeout, Cam Binder, Ryan Binder, Cade Patzel, Daniel Frary, and James Matteen would each trade baskets including a last minute basket from Matteen on an assist from Cam Binder resulting in a 24-3 lead after the first period.
