Bulldog Season Ends With 12-21 Quarterfinal Loss at Kearney Catholic

The Bulldogs of Auburn fell to Kearney Catholic Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the Class C1 state football championships. The Bulldogs, who the Friday before claimed their first playoff win in 14 years with a victory over Battle Creek, were eliminated from postseason play by the Stars.

The Nov. 6 game against Kearney Catholic was almost certainly going to be a battle that came down to the final minutes. In a matchup between the #5 Bulldogs and the #4 Stars, plenty of playmakers took the field in hopes to advance their team to the semifinal round of the 2020 playoffs.

After forcing a punt on Kearney Catholic’s first drive, the Stars’ second offensive drive had them in a 3rd & 7 just short of midfield, from where Auburn Senior Brody Darnell intercepted a Star’s pass at Auburn’s own 11-yard line. The Bulldogs were forced to punt on the initial series, but this time the Stars wouldn’t be denied. A short burst of large gains for the Stars ended with an 8-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
