Bulldog Cross Country Teams Qualify for Oct. 19 Class C State Meet at Kearney

The Auburn High School (AHS) Bulldog boys cross country team placed second and the girls third in the District C-1 meet at Boys Town. Both teams will advance to the 2018 Class C state cross country championships. The state meet will be run Friday, Oct. 19 at the Kearney Country Club. Class C race times will be 2 p.m. for the girls and 3 p.m. for the boys. The awards ceremony will be taking place at 4 p.m. Coach Mark Oliver’s Comments “The Bulldog cross country teams delivered a stunning performance at Boys Town on Thursday. Father Flanagan would have been inspired by the team effort displayed by our kids. “We knew going into the meet that our boys and girls team were on the bubble and everyone would have to step up and ‘redline’ their effort. And they did! Maximum effort for 3.1 miles. The result was a state ticket punched for both teams! “Leading their prospective teams were Seth Zimmerman and Kyra Becker.

Great effort was displayed by both runners as they finished in the Top 10. Hayden Hall, our other medalist, pushed it to the limit to finish in the Top 10. We had athletes who ran out of their minds to push us over the top on both the girls’ and boys’ teams. Even though they did not medal, these athletes were beating athletes who had beat them all year. Nathan Wright, Hunter Murphy, Derek Mason, Kyle Davenport, Bethany Kiekel, Sierra Jones, Brena Davis and Alyssa Mather pushed each other in the race and exceeded our expectations! The boys team broke a 21-year drought by qualifying for the state meet! We pulled a major upset by defeating Fort Calhoun for the runner-up plaque. We had lost to them in two previous meetings. The girls finished third by beating two teams that defeated them earlier in the year. We beat Falls City and Douglas County West to earn a spot at Kearney next week. We are running at the top of our game right now. We expect great things at state next week.” Boys Team Placings and Scores
