John F. Stukenholtz, Jr., age 74 of Nebraska City passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.
LaVona Delaine (Gray) Swanson was born on October 3, 1923, in Loretto, Nebraska. She was the youngest of four children of Charles and Lovina Ann (Anna Enterline) Gray. She attended country school at Crowhill northwest of Douglas, Nebraska. She stayed with her aunt Belle May Gray while attending high school in Eagle, Nebraska. While there, she worked as a telephone switchboard operator out of their home.
Virgil Friedrich Plager, one of three children of Eli and Lydia (Borrenpohl) Plager, was born October 19, 1928 on the family farm near Elk Creek, Nebraska. Virgil was baptized at St. James Lutheran (Long Branch) Church on November 25, 1928, his Godparents were uncles Friedrich Bohrenpohl and Friedrich Plager. He was confirmed October 25, 1942, also at St. James, and his confirmation verse was Psalm 1:1. “Curly”, as he was known, grew up on the family farm, and attended Greenfield Country School thru the 8th grade just down the road.
Ida May Garver, only child of Cecil and Elsie (Skillet) Cooney, was born May 9, 1936, on a farm south of Peru, Nebraska. Ida May grew up and attended grade school in Nemaha and graduated from Brownville High School in 1954. After graduating high school, Ida May went off to Omaha for college.
Francis Lee Mangnall, the only child of James and Margaret (Applegate) Mangnall, was born June 22, 1946 in Auburn, Nebraska. He grew up living with family in Peru, Nebraska, and was known to family as “Lee”. Francis graduated from Peru Prep High School, Peru, in 1964.
